Kenya Robotics (Interview): Game Changers

Hello guys and girls. Today marks our very first interview edition featuring Kelvin Kangethe.

Kelvin is an innovator, mentor, educator and STEAM trainer. With his background in Electrical Engineering, he is keen on sharing 21st century competencies like computer literacy with young people who are not able to access academic resources. He relishes seeing young people seize opportunities to better themselves.

In a period of 3 years of working with TME Education, Kelvin has directly impacted the lives of close to 3,000 youth by sharing his skills in IoT, engineering and programming. How incredible is that! His prolific works manifest through tangible results that can be seen in his students. According to Kelvin, "3 out of every 10 students I have trained/mentored have applied the classroom knowledge in real life by coming up with their own innovations, business ideas, and empowering their fellow peers. The impact has been evidenced by the change in their mindset.’’ Denis Ombati, a student at Waithaka Technical who is now a STEM advocate in his institution and community, and Elly Savaita, an active social entrepreneur and global teen leader, are one of his many successful students.

Kelvin has been able to make such huge impact in his society despite the challenges he faces as an educator and trainer. Some of the biggest challenges he faces include having a limited number of tools and resources to cater for all participants in his workshops and securing conducive stations in the local communities to act as workshop spaces. But that doesn’t stop him from doing what he does best. He addresses this by seeking local sponsors and partners. As an IoT enthusiast, Kelvin sees great potential for the industry. According to him, "IoT is a trillion-dollar industry in the near future. In Kenya and Africa at large, IoT is accelerating the digital economy. IoT has a big potential to mitigate problems facing our country like healthcare issues, environmental pollution and climate change. Notably, IoT is a game changer in transforming lives and job creation.’’ Some of the immediate ways IoT can be used are in the transport sector to control traffic and congestion and mitigating road accidents and in developing smart security systems. Currently, Kelvin continues to spread his knowledge through online workshops.
